When Cameron Newton led the No. 1 Auburn Tigers to a national championship over the Oregon Ducks this season, Auburn fans knew exactly where to go: Toomer's Corner.
The area at the university is known for drawing Auburn fans together following big wins and is where they ultimately ended up on Jan. 10.
But reportedly the oak trees at Toomer's Corner were poisoned following the Iron Bowl, a common herbicide being used in "lethal amounts" on the underlying soil.
Auburn took soil samples on Jan. 28 a day after a man who identified himself as "Al from Dadeville" phoned into a local syndicated radio show.
The man, who said he went to the Iron Bowl during the season, claimed it was he who poisoned the trees.
Via ESPN:
"The weekend after the Iron Bowl, I went to Auburn, Ala., because I live 30 miles away, and I poisoned the Toomer's trees," the caller told The Paul Finebaum Radio Show, saying he was at the Iron Bowl.
The caller capped the radio session off saying the trees "definitely will die" and finishing with "Roll Damn Tide."
"We will take every step we can to save the Toomer's oaks, which have been the home of countless celebrations and a symbol of the Auburn spirit for generations of Auburn students, fans, alumni and the community," university President Jay Gogue said in a statement.
Yet another example of why sports fans are crazy and can become delusional.
