Progressives United To Take On Citizens United

Progressives United To Take On Citizens United. Looks like Wisconsin Democrat Russ Feingold has found his second act. The former Senator has started an organization to combat corporate influence in politics in a move he hopes will spark "a new progressive movement" to hold elected officials accountable to the people.

The organization, called Progressives United, hopes to build a grassroots movement to push back against the effects of the Citizens United decision. While the ultimate goal is reversal of the decision, Progressives United will also support progressive candidates at the local, state and national levels.

Elected officials are not the only ones that Feingold has his sights on. The PAC will also hold the media to task for its role in failing to report on the group's main priorities.

According to Feingold, Progressives United will follow the lead of his own campaigns and not take any soft money or unlimited contributions. Full transparency is the standard the group will live by. In that sense it will be far different that the host of other 527 groups that have sprouted up as a result of Citizens United, many of which fail to disclose contributions or hide behind anonymous donors.

Feingold and Progressives United are a much needed antidote to the current crop of business-centric interests on both sides of the aisle. It may be that the only way to really fight back is to meet these interests on their own turf. This is a bold move by Feingold and may just be what the progressive movement needs right now.
