DMAE Skin | DMAE Facial Cream Controversy Continues. DMAE skin serum, named Face Finishing Moisturizer by Perricone MD Cosmeceuticals may not be as wonderful as its ads suggest, a Canadian doctor is cautioning.

DMAE, shortened from the chemical name 2-dimethylaminoethanol, is being advertised as “a facelift in a bottle.” Pharmacologist Dr. Francois Marceau of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec, however, has been testing the creams, and his results are startling.

Although Marceau notes to Reuters that DMAE has fewer complications than the average facelift surgical procedure, his tests, done on both cultured rabbit skin and human skin cells, show the same effect: the chemicals swell the cells with water and DMAE, which reduces wrinkles and fills in fine lines. The after-effect of the chemical is harsh, though: it thickens the epidermal layer and, in some cases, has killed skin cells within twenty-four hours of exposure.

About the DMAE beauty products, Marceau said to Reuters that, “From our point of view the cells are altered. They stop dividing, they stop secreting, and after...24 hours a certain proportion of them die,”
