Old Man Winter seems to have a grip on Atlanta that just won’t go away. Icy roads and a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain have caused several major Atlanta school systems to announce school closings for Thursday, December 16th.

As of 11:00 p.m. the following metro Atlanta school systems have announced school closings or delayed openings for Thursday, December 16th:

* Carroll County – 3-hour delayed opening
* Cherokee County – Closed
* Cobb County – 2-hour delayed opening
* Decatur City Schools – 2-hour delayed opening
* Forsyth County – 2-hour delayed opening
* Fulton County – Closed

With a tricky weather forecast, other school systems, including Georgia’s largest school system Gwinnett County, may still announce school closings. For the most updated list of Atlanta school closures, go to www.wsbtv.com.

Recognitions abound on BOE agenda

SUWANEE — During its meeting Thursday, the Gwinnett County Board of Education will honor 32 school and three central office teams that raised at least $10,000 for Relay For Life.

In all, the 116 school system teams raised more than $1 million for the American Cancer Society fundraiser.

The recognition is an annual event for the school board. Historically, the school system has generated about half of the money raised in Gwinnett’s Relay For Life.

The school board will also pay tribute to several educators who have recently won awards, including Kelly Stopp, a Meadowcreek Elementary reading teacher who received a Milken Educator Award; Mindy Lewis, a content assessment specialist honored as the Georgia Outstanding Social Studies Educator of the Year; art teachers Lauren Phillips and Dallas Gillespie, who received accolades from the Georgia Art Education Association; and Susan Opferman, named the Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals.

Also on the agenda, the school board will hear an update on the Vision for Public Education in Georgia report and vote on revisions to the petition to make the Gwinnett County Online Campus a charter school.

The school board meeting begins at 7 p.m. Thursday in the board room of the Instructional Support Center.
