HILTON, Ga. – He lives about four hours away, but Tommy Hayes just couldn’t resist buying a lottery ticket.
After all, the jackpot for Tuesday night’s Mega Millions drawing in Georgia was $355 million, and that was more than enough reason for Hayes to make a detour after getting off work in Dothan.
“I’ve only done this a few times before, but I thought it’d be fun,” said Hayes, who bought $20 worth of lottery tickets at a Hilton-area travel center on Tuesday. “Living in Birmingham, it’s too far to go to play, but when I’m down here or near Florida, I do it just for fun. $20 can’t make or break you.”
On the other end of the spectrum, Dothan resident Donald Bryant makes the drive to the Georgia state line frequently.
“I probably play about 50 times a year,” he said. “That ($355 million) brought me out tonight. I’ve got one ticket right now, but sometimes that’s all it takes.”
Jackie Bryant made a 30-minute drive from Newville to pick up her ticket, and she wasn’t intimidated by the odds.
“I probably buy one once a year,” she said. “(The drive) was definitely worth it. If it’s one in however many, I might be that one.”
Dothan native John Patterson bought three tickets, but he wasn’t sure exactly what he’d do if he won the money.
“I didn’t bring that list with me, (but) it’s a big list,” he said.
Hayes already had an idea of what to do with the money.
“I’ll put the kids through college and pay all my bills. That’s all I care about,” Hayes said.
Donald Bryant said he’d make quick travel plans after a Mega Millions victory.
“If I win it today, I’ll be at that championship game next Monday to see Auburn win the championship,” he said. “I’m gonna have a bunch (of friends) with me, too.”
