Boulder council gives landmark status to home of architect Charles Haertling. The home of famed Boulder architect Charles Haertling should be protected as an individual landmark, the Boulder City Council agreed Tuesday night.

In a unanimous vote, the council agreed that the house at 550 College Ave. is an excellent example of fine architecture and should be preserved. The Haertling family requested the landmark status.

Haertling designed the house in 1968 for University of Colorado professor Richard Wilson and his wife, artist Helen Wilson. After an arsonist set fire to the house in 1973, the Wilsons sold the charred remains to Haertling, who rebuilt the building using the original plans. He lived there until his death in 1984. His wife, Viola, continues to live at the house.

Haertling designed homes in Boulder for nearly 30 years, but perhaps his most notable project is known as the "foam house" at 3752 Wonderland Hill Ave. That house, which was based on the shape of a barnacle, was one of the homes featured in Woody Allen's sci-fi comedy "Sleeper."
