Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. Two years ago, Mike Tomlin became the youngest man to coach a team to a Super Bowl championship. Sunday he joined more exclusive company when his Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the New York Jets 24-19 in the AFC championship game.
Seven-plus weeks shy of his 39th birthday, Tomlin is the first coach to make two Super Bowls before turning 40. He joins Joe Gibbs as men who advanced to two Super Bowls in their first four seasons as head coaches – Gibbs did it with the Washington Redskins.
A graduate of Denbigh High and William and Mary, Tomlin is 5-1 in the playoffs, the five victories in succession since a wild-card loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in his postseason debut. Oddly enough, none of the six games was on the road. Five were at home, the other in Tampa, Fla., at the Super Bowl, where Pittsburgh defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 on Ben Roethlisberger’s last-minute touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes.
If the Steelers defeat the Green Bay Packers on Feb. 6 in Arlington, Texas, Tomlin would become the 13th coach to win multiple Super Bowls. The others:
