Gladys Horton dead at 66. Marvelettes singer Gladys Horton has died at a nursing home in Sherman Oaks, Calif., following a stroke last year, her family said. She was 66.

Horton, a Detroit native, helped the group record hits such as "Please Mr. Postman," "Beechwood 4-5789," "Playboy" and "Too Many Fish in The Sea." She left the Marvelettes in 1967 and retired from performing in 2009.

"My mother died peacefully," Horton's son, Vaughn Thornton, said in a statement issued Thursday to The Detroit Free Press by the Motown Alumni Association. "She fought as long as she could."

Horton is survived by two sons.

The Detroit Free Press said funeral arrangements have not yet been made. No cause for Horton's death Wednesday was reported.
