Chandler Mall Shooting: Daniel Munoz Perez The Gunman. Chandler Mall in Chandler, Arizona was the scene of violence this afternoon. Gunfire opened up outside of Baja Fresh in the mall. Fortunately, no one was injured.
The near-by Chandler Fashion Center was placed on lockdown, until 5 p.m. Kyrene del Sureno Elementary School was placed on lockdown as well.
The lockdown ended at 3 p.m., but students at Kyrene Aprende Middle School were not able to take the bus home as police searched the surrounding area. The bus had stops in the same neighborhood as the mall.
According to Chandler police spokesman Sergeant Joe Favazzo, Adam Hernandez has been arrested as the principle suspect in the shooting. Hernandez held up the Baja Fresh, beginning at approximately 12 p.m.
He had exchanged fire with a U.S. Marshal Task Force. Two hostages emerged from the restaurant at 3 p.m., around the same time Chandler was arrested.
U.S. Marshal spokesman Tom Henman told the press that the U.S. Marshal Office had received intelligence that 25-year-old Daniel Perez was also arrested. Perez had allegedly tried to assist in Hernandez’s escape.
However, it has been reported that Hernandez was the one driving the vehicle. As escape seemed unlikely, Hernandez bailed from the vehicle.
In an unrelated incident, another person was arrested in Chandler Mall at 3:30 p.m.
