Police say the 41-year-old was travelling in a car attempting to cross a flooded causeway in Burketown, western Queensland, when the vehicle was hit by flood water.
At least two other people are reported missing in flooding that has been described as being of "biblical proportions".
Rescue workers are searching for a man whose small fishing boat was swamped by flood waters in the mouth of the Boyne River, and for a swimmer who disappeared in the Fitzroy river, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
Around 200,000 people have been affected by the rising water in the northeast of the country.
Several towns have been evacuated with the cost of the clean-up expected to run into billions of pounds.
An area larger than France and Germany has been affected.
Officials say half of Queensland's 715,305 square miles has been hit with many communities expected to be under water for more than a week.
The city of Rockhampton, near the coast, is the next community in the water's path and officials have been evacuating residents for several days.
Mayor Brad Carter warned about 40% of the city could be affected by the surging waters, and residents could be forced to wait at least two weeks before returning home.
The Queen has offered her "sincere sympathies" to those affected.
